Knee Surgery

This afternoon I met my knee surgeon for the first time at University Collage London Hospital (UCLH).

He was everything I could have hoped for in a surgeon as he really listened to me when I told him about my knee problems, he has an outstanding reputation and is at the forefront of robotic knee surgery.

As I had expected he wants to replace both my kneecaps, but what I hadn't expected was that he offered to do both replacements together with the help of robotic knee surgery. I now need to see various departments within his team to prepare for my operation by May 2024.

The knee surgery will be performed in UCLH's new Grafton Way Building that opened last year and was designed by
Scott Tallon Walker Architects in association with Edward Williams Architects, which is an interesting 21century hospital building.

Knee Update

After months of doctors and my physiotherapist not knowing exactly what was wrong with my knees, I have had an MRI of my knees done.

I have
chondromalacia patella, which is the breakdown of cartilage on the underside of the kneecap. The kneecap rubs directly against the thigh bone, it hurts and wells. It is common among runners and other athletes and nicknamed "runner's knee." In my case this is severe and has caused another complication subchondral bone marrow oedema.

I will now need knee surgery. I will probably wait months for this surgery and then I will have a long recovery, so I can't imagine being able to work in Montenegro again for about a year.

Damaged Knees

While in London over the winter I stupidly damaged both of my knees after doing my usual habit of overdoing whatever exercise I am doing.

Doctors don't know exactly what is wrong and I have been told to completely rest my knees, which is not in my nature to do, but if I want to get better I will have to do as they say.

No more work can be done in Montenegro now for many months because I will not be able to get out there as I cannot walk properly.

Pool Walls

Rok and his son John have installed the frames that are needed to create the concrete side walls of the pool.

Glass Conservatory

The glass will not go into this conservatory until the very end of the project, just in case it gets damaged.

Vlado has kindly built this conservatory for me himself as I had found it impossible in Montenegro to get anything near what I wanted. I could have got it elsewhere in Europe but the budget I have for this part of the project would not allow such a huge expense.

It has been a long project and every step of the way I needed to have a maximum amount I'm prepared to spend on each area of this project. Budgeting is of key importance to the success of any project.

Real Stone Floor

Vlado, Stefan and I stopped to look at the view down onto the Bay for Kotor as we drove on the Niksic road searching for an alternative to the real stone we are using at Zabrdje, for all the ground floor flooring.

Cobra quarry in Kotor is having big problems producing the 80 x 80 x 02 cm stone tiles I have specified, because of an unexpected fault with their machinery and it is taking them a really long time to do my order.

On this trip we were unable to find anything else as beautiful and perfect for Zabrdje house as the stone Cobra quarry has.

We will have to wait for the quarry to produce what we want, which will hold everything up for a while.

This large double garage and wall has been beautifully built from the stone dug out of the ground beneath it.

It looks perfectly hunkered down into the landscape as if it has always been there, which is exactly what I wanted when I designed it.

To put the scale of this wall and garage in perspective - The wall is 33.5m long with a maximum height of 4.6m. The garage and storage room are 10m wide and 4.2m high.

Original Villa New Roof

We are taking the roof off the original villa because it needs to be replaced as it was not structurally sound. This will enable us to build the walls up a bit higher so the four new larger windows on this top floor with be in their correct positions.

There are three other benefits of doing this major construction work, firstly this original villa will be at the correct height to be able to join the newly rebuilt villa, secondly the ceilings will be higher and thirdly the rafters will be able to be exposed.

Picking Four Olive Trees

While I was in London Stefan with the help of Nikola, a gardener and plant supplier from Bar, had found me some olive trees that were planted in an olive grove near the Albania border.

They took some photos of all the olive trees available and with the help of Nikola telling me which were there healthiest I chose these four trees.

How fantastically useful WhatsApp has been throughout this project, enabling me to remotely be there when I am in another country.

Getting The Detail Right

I was in London and with Stefan's help, by constantly contacting me on WhatsApp, I was able to see how the new stonemasons were building up the wall. Eventually they started to completely understand how I wanted the stonework to look.

You can clearly see in this photo, at the bottom of the wall, they are still trying to do their easier straight line (though a bit curved). Then their composition got more fluid and organic in appearance as they went up the wall.

New Stonemasons Started

Today at last our new stonemasons has started by firstly pointing the already completed stonework. They have come as a trial to see how things go, because all work must stop soon for Montenegro's summer building work break.

D90F14AE-E885-4315-9240-497AE9E0F4DC_1_105_c

A few months ago we suddenly had big problems with the previous stonemasons boss. We eventually decided it was best to go our separate ways as he had become extremely difficult to deal with.

It was hard to find another stonemason as they were either already busy working on other buildings projects or reluctant to finish what someone else had started.

I am also contributing to the problem as I have become more specific about how I want the stonework to look, after seeing various types of stonework. I now only want stonework that is fluidly organic in appearance. In this part of the world most stonemasons like doing easier straight lines, which is not acceptable.

Parking Area Cleared

After excavating the top road parking space, which was extremely hard work digging through incredibly hard rock and required two very large diggers. We now have enough space up there for at least five cars, a double garage and a store room.

The added bonus of excavating this land is that we now have a lot of stone to be sorted out and got ready (over time) to build all the garden walls, terraces, barbecue area, walls of lower road and upper road parking spaces and finally the garage.

It is hard to see from this photo how big this parking plot is, which is at least 30 m long and 10m deep at the widest end.

Some more excavation work will need to be done to this plot in the future, which will make it even bigger, as we will need some more stone to build with.

The project had to be put of hold because of incorrect purchase registration details and various planning problems, which had to be sorted out.

Good news is that we started again today, which is extremely exciting.

All the excavation work needs to be done first before they start building the villa and they are now digging out the pool.

Now The Project Can Start

The builders started by taking down the ruined part of the villa. All the stone that is in good enough condition must be saved for rebuilding this part of the house.

Extra Land Purchase

Parking Space & The Precarious Parking Platform in The Distance

Today I completed the purchase of some extra land at Zabrdje, which is right next to the house I have already purchased. This land has two lovely trees on it, including an olive tree and I have purchased it to make the existing garden larger.

This extra land was for sale as part of a much larger plot and I only wanted to buy a third of it. The seller only agreed to sell me the third I needed if I also purchased a smaller plot on the other side of the road directly above my house, which was for sale at a much lower price per square metre than the rest of the land he had for sale. So I agreed to his stipulations.

Map of The Plots I Purchased

On the map above you can see my original purchase of villas and land on Plot 286. The new garden is about a third of Plot 287. The whole of Plot 229, on the other side of the small road above the villas, is for parking and a garage.

This smaller extra plot above the road and villas is actually a truly fantastic extra purchase, which will be excavated and used to build parking for five cars and eventually a garage. All the excavated stone will be used within this project, it will be like having my own mini quarry.

The existing parking platform that came with the villas is very precarious and extremely unattractive and I will be glad to see it go.

The purchase of this land had to be completed before the project could start.

Really Good New Builders

It is now April I and have just been into Tivat in Montenegro to meet my new builders, well their representative at Prova Restaurant.

Stefan my new project manager for their company called Prostor-Projekt and is a very capable intelligent young man who speaks fluent English, which seems to be a rarity in the Montenegrin building trade.

Stefan works closely with Vlado an extremely knowledgeable engineer and building contractor with many years of experience, including designing and building the new cathedral in Bar, which is a costal town and seaport in southern Montenegro.

Stefan will start firstly by dealing with Herceg Novi Municipality on my behalf regarding the planning approval. I must now get on and finish all the drawings as soon as possible.

My New Project Manager Stefan

I felt extremely confident after years of dealing with different building companies in the UK, that I was going to be able to work really well with the Prostor-Projekt team as we think about our work and what needed to be done in exactly the same way.

I was doing a big refurbishment project in London, so I was really torn between wanting to stay and get more involved with what was about to get started in Montenegro and needing to rush back to my commitments in London.

Back to London I must go.

Hopeful Future

Over the last 18 months I have learnt to adapt to my new way of life and I have come to realise that I cannot let having a malignant melanoma ruin my life.

I started the healing process by going on a family summer holiday taking our dog Otto, to Harlem in the Netherlands, where it was hot but not so hot that I had to hide away. I walked and cycled around this lovely country the whole time, which made me feel free to do what makes me happy.

Lovely Haarlem

I went to Montenegro in May and October, being the cooler months and just stayed out of the midday sun. In fact I discovered that these are the best times of the year to go to Montenegro as it is much less touristy. Everything looked even more beautiful and found out that these are also the most favourite times of year for local people as well.

While in Montenegro I had various meetings with builders and I am back on track to start this project next year.

Time To Change

After trying to change myself into another type of person, who enjoys being completely out of the sun, I began to feel a bit trapped by not being able to be myself anymore.

I started to think I should never go to Montenegro again, unless it was not summer. When the whole reason I had bought these properties was because I loved the sun and being warm and the sense of freedom it gives you.

I was really terribly confused by my new situation.

Malignant Melanoma

The one thing I did not mention in my last posting was that I had recently been diagnosed with the most aggressive form of skin cancer, a malignant melanoma.

In June 2012 I had noticed a tiny black dot on my upper right arm. I instantly knew this was not good and luckily within three days saw a skin cancer specialist, who immediately did a biopsy and discovered it was a malignant melanoma.

The biopsy showed the cancer had already spread, so after two more operations in quick succession the doctors hoped they had removed all the malignancy. The only treatment one can have after these operations is to have the skin all over your body and your glands checked every three months for five year.

Foolishly Out in The Midday Sun

I have natural strawberry blond hair and lots of freckles and knowing such people are the most susceptible to malignant melanomas, I now thought how stupid I had been to ever sit in the hot sun with my type of skin and hair colouring.

The doctors told me to never go in the sun again or I would die. From now on if I am in a hot country I must stay out of the sun and be completely covering up whenever I have to walk about in the sunshine.

The Sun in All its Dangerous Glory

In August on my last visit to Montenegro I had just had my last lot of stitches out and was feeling extremely vulnerable and unable to go out in the sunshine. I was in a sort of state of shock about what had just happened.

Overnight I had got to change from being a very active outdoors sort of person, into someone I just did not know how to be. I could definitely no longer go on holiday to hot countries without being constantly extremely careful.

I wondered what I was going to do now about my future life in Montenegro, being one of those hot countries.

Summer Holiday

The biggest worry was when I took my two children to Blue Horizons Beach (Plavi Horizonti Plaža) and saw that Hotel Blue Horizons (Hotel Plavi Horizonti) a large busy hotel, had been completely flattened since our last visit.

There have been many rumours over the years about this or that company purchasing this site, with none of them ever coming to fruition. I just hope that whoever does end up developing it, that they still allow all the local people use this lovely beach.

We will have to wait and see what happens next.

Staying In Kotor

On this visit to Montenegro I decided to see if it is possible to find people to help me with do a building project in Montenegro.

I needed to find an English speaking local architects who would submit my drawings to the municipality and a company to build this property.

I also had meetings in Kotor with my solicitor and bank, to give my solicitor the necessary rights to legally act on my behalf whenever I'm out of the country.

Lustica Development

Orascom has recently changed from being an Egyptian into a Swiss company.

They are now talking about possibly working on the developments of
a eco-town to be built in the Cornish mining communities near St Austell. This development would be called Eco-Bos if they end up going ahead with this project.

Orascom is a company with a good track record and seems to care about what they are doing, there are pros and cons to this sort of development, so let's hope it's more good than bad.

Orascom

A large very well respected Egyptian development company Orascom Development Holdings (ODM) has recently purchased a 90% share in Luštica Development, a company started by the Montenegrin government in order to develop a particular area of Luštica called Trašte Bay.

Orascom intends to build an eco-friendly high-class hotel resort with a golf course, 3 marinas, hospitals, schools and lots of shops. Though it will give a lot of work to the local community I do hope it will not destroy it at the same time, hence my reluctance to start work now.

Orascom has 15 years of experience building resort towns and creating self-sufficient communities.
